Lamborghini SUV Approved for Production

In an attempt to increase sales and broaden its market share, Lamborghini announced it would be releasing an SUV by the year 2017. The model was officially introduced at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012, but was yet to be confirmed for production until CEO Rupert Stadler made the announcement last weekend. The Urus will feature a much more compact design than other SUVs, and will also be considerably lighter due to its use of carbon fiber. Executives have announced they expect to sell around 3,000 units per year upon release.

The vehicle, which executives are referring to as a “concept SUV,” will feature room for at least four and will include a hatchback with storage room in the rear. Rumors suggest it will feature a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine and will have a plug-in option for electric charging. The vehicle will likely carry a price tag of around $150,000, which is to be expected of any car released under the Lamborghini moniker.

Many believe the company hopes the Urus will increase its influence in China, as more Chinese citizens are gravitating toward SUVs and away from smaller cars. Many experts also believe the move is an attempt to siphon away market influence from Ferrari, a longtime competitor of Lamborghini. Other luxury lines have introduced SUVs in recent months, including Bentley, Porsche, and BMW, but Ferrari has yet to introduce an SUV. Although both Lamborghini and Ferrari have become synonymous with luxury sports cars, Ferrari still continues to outsell its chief competitor globally.
